My Fulkerson osteotomy
31 of January 2012 – St. Richards Hosptal Chichester – surgeon Mr. Moss
Three days in hospital, little sleep, wife bringing meals in as I refused to eat the food (I was offered £300 by a tabloid newspaper, via a PR contact, to photo food during my stay in hospital. I refused on priciple that hospital work with what they’ve got and digs and swipes by the gutter press will not help.)
24 Staples, bruising on ankle, back of the knee two days out of hospital. Unbelievable pain.
Huge burden on Andrea, looking after three kids and an invalid husband for this time. Runa (mother-in-law) over from Norway for the first week, my parents away for five weeks.
Kids very understanding and kept clear of my leg. Gus pointing and occassionaly touching it saying “sore, sore”, Flecity was very upset when she first saw the wound, Isabella just showed me her scars and brusies.
Housebound and sofa/bed eight weeks, except three trips to doctors, infection, dressing change and staple removal.
Leg braced in starp for eight weeks, no bending, piankillers three time a day.
Physio and Hydrotherapy started in week ten and back on the pain killers.
Great improvement weeks eleven and twelve, back at work, up and down stairs ish.
X ray taken 16th April 2012 showing screws.
17th April – still can not stand or walk long or far, but very mobile now. Feeling it may have been all worth it for the first time. Surgeon says another month and bone will have healed completely, but it may be twelve months before I can know if it has been successful.
